I designed a high-impact intro for BMX Freestyle Fanatic that bridges 80s nostalgia with modern street culture. By blending neon aesthetics, Tampa Bay’s skyline, and DIY zine textures like torn paper and dot gradients, I created a "brand anthem" for their 27,000+ members. The project successfully translated 2D underground print vibes into a polished 3D environment, keeping the brand’s logo at the center of a period-authentic, high-production tribute to BMX history.
Storyboard and Research
To ensure technical precision, I mapped the animation’s "beats" through hand-sketched storyboards aligned with the client’s brand goals. To transition from 2D concept to 3D reality, I performed a deep-dive study of a specific bike build from the channel. By analyzing assembly steps, material textures, and mechanical components, I built a "real-world" blueprint that ensured the final 3D model and rig were both authentic and functionally accurate.
Production
Modeling and Texturing
Production began with a blocking phase to nail the bike’s silhouette and geometry before I added complex parts like the drivetrain. To ensure mechanical authenticity, I built a custom physics-based rig where the pedal rotation drives the gears and chain in sync with the wheels. For the final "Digital Twin" look, I used procedural materials and a "subtle storytelling" texturing strategy. I added light surface wear to the metals and plastics to achieve photorealism without losing the status of a collector's masterpiece.
Post-Production
Video Editing and Compositing
To transition from 3D production to final delivery, I imported the rendered images into Adobe After Effects as an image sequence. This post-production phase allowed me to layer in the curated, customly-altered graphics and 80s-inspired elements, unifying the visual language of the piece. To complete the piece, I curated a rhythmic, 80s hip-hop soundtrack that underscored the ‘street' energy of the brand. The final result was a seamless, high-impact brand anthem, exported and optimized for the client’s specific requirements.
